American Idol’s new judging panel will look quite familiar come 2014. The network announced Tuesday that Jennifer Lopez, a judge during Season 10 and 11, and former mentor Harry Connick, Jr. will join country star Keith Urban on Idol’s judging panel for Season 13. It has not been said why exactly they are going back to three judges, but it has been noted that Idol has had its greatest success with a three-judge format. Last year was Idol’s first and only year with four judges.
In Season 11, viewership dropped more than 20% and after Lopez and Aerosmith’s Steven Tyler left that year, ratings dropped 20% once again in Season 12. I think it is safe to say after hearing numerous back and forth comments between judges Mariah Carey and Nikki Minaj; the group just did not have chemistry.
Even though Idol remains in the top rankings of shows, over the past few years they have seen some competition. Some of those shows include NBC’s The Voice and The X Factor.
Idol has been auditioning this summer for Season 13. There most recent stops were in Boston, Austin and Omaha. Season 13 will premiere in January like normal.
